How A Gua Sha Tool Leaves My Skin Feeling Smoother & Tighter
In the quest for healthier, youthful skin, there’s a timeless practice that’s been gaining popularity on social media in recent years: Gua Sha. This technique has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine to promote healing and alleviate various ailments.
When adapted for skincare, Gua Sha involves using a flat, smooth tool (typically made of jade, rose quartz or other materials) to gently glide over the skin. This process helps to increase blood circulation and release facial tension, leaving you with a brighter, more youthful complexion.
Benefits of Gua Sha
IMPROVES BLOOD CIRCULATION
Gua Sha promotes better blood flow to the skin, which delivers essential nutrients and encourages the removal of toxins, reducing puffiness and resulting in a more radiant complexion.
PROMOTES RELAXATION & STRESS REDUCTION
Gua Sha is not only a skincare practice but also a self-care ritual. The act of massaging your face helps to relax facial muscles and relieve tension, promoting an overall sense of well-being.
ENHANCES PRODUCT ABSORPTION
When used in conjunction with your favourite skincare products, Gua Sha can significantly boost their effectiveness. The gentle massaging motion helps these products penetrate deeper into the skin, enhancing our skin’s absorption of the active ingredients, and maximising their benefits.
Want to try this? Here are some important things to keep in mind when practising Gua Sha at home!
START WITH A CLEAN FACE
Before you begin your Gua Sha ritual, it’s essential to cleanse your face thoroughly. Removing makeup, dirt and excess sebum ensures that the tool glides smoothly over your skin, reducing the risk of irritation.
APPLY A FACIAL OIL
Never use Gua Sha on dry skin! Apply a generous amount of facial oil before you start scraping your face. The oil should provide sufficient glide across your skin but avoid over-applying it to prevent an excessively slick appearance.
ALWAYS BE GENTLE
Gua Sha is not about applying pressure! Hold the tool at a 30 to 45-degree angle, and with great care, pull or scrape it across your skin. As a rule, all movements should be directed upwards, following the natural flow of the lymphatic system. Avoid pressing too hard as it can result in skin irritation, redness or even bruising.
